How long to allow

A summit expedition takes around two months. The Everest Base Camp trek typically requires 12-18 days.

Getting there

Most visitors fly into Kathmandu, then take a domestic flight to Lukla to begin the trek.

Tickets

Permits are required for the Everest region, and separate permits are needed for summit attempts. Expedition providers usually manage these.

What catches people out

Altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of fitness. Acclimatize slowly and do not ignore symptoms.

Reaching the Highest Point

The mountain is the world's highest, 8,848 meters (29,031 feet). It sits on the border of Nepal and China. For most visitors, the journey means a trek to Everest Base Camp. This is a demanding walk through high-altitude terrain.

Summiting the peak is for experienced mountaineers. The main route from Nepal is not technically complex, but it demands extreme endurance. Dangers include altitude sickness, severe weather, and icefalls, particularly the Khumbu Icefall.

What The Experience Is Like

On the trek to Base Camp, expect daily walks, cold nights, and simpler accommodations. You will pass through Sherpa villages and see prayer flags. The air is thin, and the landscape is rugged, offering a raw view of the Himalayas.

The views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks are clear on good days. It's a journey focused on physical effort and gradual ascent. There is a strong sense of camaraderie among fellow trekkers and climbers.

When to Plan Your Visit

The best times to visit are during the pre-monsoon season in April and May, or the post-monsoon season in October and November. These months offer more stable weather conditions, crucial for safety and visibility.

Avoid the monsoon season from June to September due to heavy rains and cloud cover, which obscure views and make trekking difficult. The winter months, December to March, bring extreme cold and heavy snow, making travel very challenging.

The background

Mount Everest (known in Nepali as Sagarmāthā, in Sherpa as Chamolangma, and in Tibetan as Jomolangma/Čhomolangma is the highest mountain on Earth above sea level. It lies in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas and marks part of the China-Nepal border at its summit. Its height was most recently measured in 2020 through a joint survey by Nepalese and Chinese authorities as 8,848.86 m (29,031 ft 8+1⁄2 in). Mount Everest attracts many climbers, including highly experienced mountaineers. There are two main climbing routes, one approaching the summit from the southeast in Nepal (known as the standard route) and the other from the north in China. While not posing substantial technical climbing challenges on the standard route, Everest presents dangers such as altitude sickness, weather, and wind, as well as hazards from avalanches and the Khumbu Icefall. As of May 2024, 340 people have died on Everest. Over 200 bodies remain on the mountain and have not been removed due to the dangerous conditions. Climbers typically ascend only part of Mount Everest's elevation, as the mountain's full elevation is measured from the geoid, which approximates sea level. The closest sea to Mount
