The reality of the terrain
Expect long drives between points of interest. The park is spread out, and you will spend significant time behind the wheel moving from the Columbia Icefield to the townsite. Do not expect public transit to reach the trailheads.
The terrain is rugged and weather changes quickly. Even in July, you can experience snow at higher elevations. Carry layers and waterproof gear regardless of the forecast.

When to go
June is for those who do not mind cold nights and lingering mud. Many higher trails remain closed due to snow, but the lower valley paths are usually clear. You will also find fewer crowds during these early weeks.
July and August offer the best weather for mountain activities. This is when the alpine wildflowers bloom and the lakes lose their frozen crust. Expect limited parking at popular trailheads if you arrive after 9am.

Many people underestimate the size of the park. Trying to see the entire area in a weekend leads to exhaustion and time spent only in the car. Focus on one region of the park each day.

Jasper National Park, in Alberta, Canada, is the largest national park within Alberta's Rocky Mountains, spanning 11,000 km2 (4,200 sq mi). It was established as Jasper Forest Park in 1907, renamed as a national park in 1930, and declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1984. Its location is north of Banff National Park and west of Edmonton. The park contains the glaciers of the Columbia Icefield, springs, lakes, waterfalls and mountains.
