The physical reality of the climb
Expect steep, uneven stone steps that vary wildly in height. Some sections require you to use your hands to scramble up near-vertical slopes. It is a strenuous physical workout, not a casual stroll. The crowds are highly concentrated.
At popular sections like Badaling, you will walk side by side with thousands of other visitors. For a quieter experience, you must travel further to restored but less commercial sections like Mutianyu, or wild, unrestored ruins like Jiankou.

Weather and timing
April, May, September, and October are the best months to visit. Summer is incredibly hot, offers little shade, and coincides with heavy domestic school holiday crowds.
Winter brings freezing winds and dangerous, icy steps. Aim to arrive at the gates early in the morning. Midday is when tour buses arrive, filling the wall and the pathways with large groups.

The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications in China. They were built across the historical northern borders of ancient Chinese states and Imperial China as protection against various nomadic groups from the Eurasian Steppe. The first walls date to the 7th century BC; these were joined together in the Qin dynasty.
