Petra was the last of the 10 ancient wonders I travelled to. Not the easiest to get to, but that of course is part of the fun, and certainly part of the adventure. Flying to Amman, Jordan, we stayed in a hotel on the Dead Sea just southwest of Amman itself. A great location for our exploration of Jordan and of course Petra.
From there it was about a 90 minute drive to Petra. We had arranged for a driver for the day who picked us up fairly early from our hotel to take us to Petra. Highly recommend a private drive as opposed to group tour or renting. We arrived to the complex via the "back" way through canyons and over hills and across rock strewn fields, way which was awesome. Great views of the land below, the Dead Sea, Massad in the distance (which was a trip for another day); incredible landscape. Our driver dropped us off near the entrance, providing us with his contact details when we were ready to be picked up.
I will not go into detail here about Petra as there is enough written about, but I will say it did exceed expectations. The complex is huge, much more so than the one single building most associate with Petra (think Raiders of the Lost Ark). Plan for several hours of walking, across uneven and broken terrain in a few places and some stairs and small rises. There are a few places for refreshment and a few souvenir stops inside the vast complex. Really, a great excursion to this Ancient Wonder of the World...will add some more another time. Would strongly suggest spending another full day or two exploring Jordan. Quite a bit to see, that you may not be aware of.
